Hearts in Action: WFWP PA Uplifts Mothers and Children in the Philippines

Written by : Jizly Dohou

In a world where hunger and undernutrition continue to rob children and mothers of their potential, grassroots action has become more critical than ever. The Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP) Pennsylvania has taken a bold and compassionate step to meet this challenge through its international outreach initiative in Cotta, Lucena City, Philippines.

Launched under the banner of the HealthCare Network and After School Hour Feeding Program, this project addresses two fundamental needs: nutrition and health care. At its core is a simple but powerful belief—that no child should go to school hungry, and no mother should face preventable health issues due to lack of access to basic services.

A Community-Driven Mission

Every month, more than 50 children and their parents gather in anticipation—not just for a warm meal, but for the comfort of care and community. With services delivered on the last Saturday of each month, the program offers consistent support to families who often live on the margins.

The most recent session, held on June 28, 2025, exemplified the program’s holistic approach. After enjoying nutritious meals, families received vital health services administered by professionals using advanced tools and screenings. Blood pressure monitoring, diabetes testing, and COVID-19 diagnostics are among the many services offered to promote early detection and intervention.

What sets this initiative apart is its deep collaboration with local mothers and community leaders. By involving those who are closest to the children, WFWP PA fosters a sense of ownership and trust—essential elements for long-term impact.

Healthcare as a Bridge to a Better Life

Among the dedicated healthcare workers supporting the program is Evelyn Lagrazon, a registered nurse practitioner with years of experience in community health. Evelyn volunteers her time and expertise each month, offering screenings and engaging in conversations about healthy living and early prevention.

“Monitoring maternal health is crucial,” Evelyn explains. “A mother’s well-being directly affects her child’s development—physically, emotionally, and cognitively. These health assessments are more than tests; they are a bridge to a better quality of life.” Through her work, Evelyn encourages families to take proactive steps toward healthier lifestyles, empowering them with knowledge and support.

The heart behind this initiative is Ms. Jizly Dohou, Chairwoman of WFWP Pennsylvania. Her passion for empowering women and children in need has fueled the momentum of this program. “Our mission is not just to feed and treat,” Ms. Dohou states. “It’s to restore dignity, inspire hope, and invest in the future of these communities.”

As the program grows, so does its impact. With plans to continue this work monthly, WFWP PA is laying the foundation for a healthier, stronger, and more resilient generation in Lucena City. By addressing both immediate needs and long-term development, the Feeding and Healthcare Program reflects the true spirit of humanitarian outreach—uplifting lives one meal, one checkup, and one smile at a time.
