WFWP DC Chapter Hosts Summer Health Fair Promoting Preventative Health

Written by Elizabeth Aihe

On Saturday, June 28th, the Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP) DC Chapter partnered with the Howard University Student Health Center, the Metropolitan Police Department’s Community Officers, and the Washington DC Family Church to host a Summer Health Fair focused on preventative health measures and community wellness.

The event welcomed over 106 participants from the local community, offering essential health services, educational resources, and a warm atmosphere of collaboration and care.

Attendees were first welcomed at the registration table, where WFWP brochures detailing the organization’s mission and activities were prominently displayed and drew significant interest. Many then had their blood pressure checked by Ms. Tekwe, a compassionate nurse practitioner, who provided personalized health advice tailored to each individual’s needs.

Next, participants visited the nutrition information table, staffed by two knowledgeable representatives from the Howard University Student Health Center, where they learned practical tips for maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle. As a thoughtful conclusion to the visit, each guest received a bottle of water and a bag of fresh fruit, generously provided by the Washington DC Family Church.

A total of 16 staff and volunteers supported the event, including four active WFWP members, who contributed to the smooth flow and welcoming spirit of the fair.

This health fair built upon the momentum of the first-ever Spring Health Fair held in March, which had featured on-the-spot doctor’s appointment scheduling through Unity Health Care for individuals with high blood pressure. While the Unity representative was unable to attend the summer event, Ms. Tekwe ensured participants still received high-quality, individualized care recommendations.

A special moment during the weekend came when Mary, one of the volunteers who provided Spanish translation for participants, joined the Sunday service at the church. In appreciation of her valuable contribution, WFWP DC Chairwoman Elizabeth Aihe, together with the team, presented her with a WFWP necklace as a token of gratitude.

Elizabeth also plans to follow up personally with several women who expressed interest at the WFWP booth, inviting them to stay engaged through future events and initiatives.

The Summer Health Fair was marked by a strong sense of community, care, and empowerment. Many attendees shared heartfelt appreciation and expressed eagerness to return for the Fall Health Fair later this year.
