October’s edition of the Self-Care Isn't Selfish series featured guest presenter Elizabeth Buergi—a coach, Story Work facilitator, and certified yoga teacher dedicated to helping individuals find freedom, hope, and healing through self-compassion. Drawing from her background in somatic embodiment practices (trained by Kendra Stein), Internal Family Systems (parts work), mindfulness, and faith, Elizabeth guided participants on a powerful journey to reconnect with their true identity.
To bring the healing potential of Story Work to life, Elizabeth invited Myrna Lapres for a live, real-time demonstration. Myrna opened up about a vulnerable memory from when she was just five years old, recalling a moment of intense fear. Rather than treating the memory as an abstract thought, Elizabeth guided Myrna to tune into her somatic experience, helping her locate where in her body she held the emotional weight of feeling responsible for her sisters.
As the floor opened for questions and group reflection, Myrna shared a core realization: this early childhood event created a lifelong belief that her personal worth was tied to taking on heavy responsibility. Building on Elizabeth’s somatic guiding, Kendra Stein helped round out the session’s insights, reframe the narrative, and highlight how acting with courage—even when afraid—and caring deeply for others are profound strengths to be honored, rather than burdens to carry alone.
The session served as a moving reminder of how examining our early stories with somatic awareness and community support can turn old wounds into clarity and peace.
