Portland, Oregon – October 18, 2026
In a world where differences can often create division, coming together in the spirit of peace and understanding is more important than ever. On October 18, 2026, the Women's Federation for World Peace (WFWP) Cascade Chapter hosted a meaningful Bridge of Peace event at the Portland Family Church, bringing together 35 participants from diverse faiths, cultures, and communities.
The gathering aimed to inspire a renewed commitment to peace, strengthen relationships, and equip participants with practical tools for compassionate communication and conflict resolution. Above all, it sought to cultivate a culture of understanding and reconciliation, where meaningful connections could grow beyond differences.
The afternoon began with a shared lunch, providing an opportunity for participants to connect and build friendships. Following a warm welcome from Arika Mizuguchi, the program opened with an interfaith prayer offered by Laila Al Amin and an introduction to WFWP by Kelly Coryell.
Investing in Peace Through Everyday Actions
Suzanne Mulcahy, an educational psychologist and longtime WFWP supporter, delivered the keynote address, "Invest in Peace, Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day." Her presentation highlighted the importance of recognizing that peace begins with individuals and extends outward through everyday interactions.
She introduced essential peacemaking skills, including self-awareness, compassionate communication, conflict clarification, thoughtful decision-making, and a six-step problem-solving approach. These practical tools encouraged participants to reflect on how they can contribute to peaceful relationships within their families, workplaces, and communities.
Adding an element of movement and mindfulness, Taka Yamamoto, a young participant from Japan, guided attendees through a brief exercise inspired by Tai Chi, offering a moment to reconnect with themselves and one another.
Doyle Banks followed with an engaging presentation on compassionate communication. Through an interactive demonstration illustrating human connection, he encouraged participants to recognize the emotions and experiences that unite us. His message reinforced the importance of empathy, active listening, and understanding in building stronger relationships.
Ellie Furughi also contributed to the gathering by sharing a beautiful prayer from the Bahá'í tradition, reflecting the shared desire for harmony and peace across different beliefs.
Crossing the Bridge Toward Understanding
A highlight of the afternoon was the Bridge of Peace Ceremony, introduced by Christine Froehlich, who traveled from California to participate in the event.
Christine shared the history and significance of the Bridge of Peace initiative, emphasizing its guiding principles of compassion, personal responsibility, reconciliation, and lasting relationships. Her presentation invited participants to look beyond differences and recognize the shared humanity that connects us all.
During the ceremony, five pairs of representatives crossed the symbolic bridge, exchanging flowers and embracing as gestures of friendship, respect, and a shared commitment to peace. The heartfelt exchanges created a memorable atmosphere, demonstrating how simple acts of kindness can help overcome barriers and foster genuine connections.
The event concluded with participants joining hands in a circle and singing "Let There Be Peace on Earth" by Jill and Sy Miller. This collective moment served as a reminder that creating a more peaceful world begins with the choices and actions of each individual.
Reflections of Hope and Connection
The gathering left a lasting impression on participants, many of whom expressed appreciation for the opportunity to learn, connect, and share in a common vision of peace.
Lyn Rush, representing the Filipino community, reflected:
"What a meaningful Sunday bridging peace between women leaders today! We keep moving forward together to enhance the beauty of the earth!"
Another participant, Taka, shared:
"Thank you so much. I learned a lot from today's presentation on peace!"
Ellie, representing the Bahá'í community, expressed her appreciation for the educational presentations and interactive activities, particularly Suzanne Mulcahy's keynote address and the demonstration on compassionate communication.
Presenter Doyle Banks also shared his gratitude for the opportunity to contribute:
"Thank you for inviting me to participate and share about connecting with each other through compassionate communication."
Peace Begins With Connection
The event brought together individuals from Sufi, Bahá'í, and Christian communities, along with community advocates, ecumenical ministers, neighbors, and families. Their participation reflected a shared belief that peace is not limited by religion, culture, or background but is a universal aspiration that can bring people together.
Through meaningful dialogue, practical learning, and symbolic acts of reconciliation, the WFWP Cascade Chapter's Bridge of Peace event demonstrated that building peace is an ongoing process rooted in empathy, respect, and human connection.
The gathering was beautifully documented by photographer Toshiaki Mizuguchi, whose photographs captured the heartfelt interactions and memorable moments throughout the day.
As participants departed, they carried with them a simple yet powerful message: Peace begins with each of us, grows through our relationships, and flourishes when we choose understanding over division.
