IMPORTANT TRIP INFORMATION

VISA INFORMATION

All US Citizens must obtain a tourist visa in order to travel to Rwanda. This can be obtained upon arrival at the Kigali International Airport for $50 USD. It is strongly recommended to have sufficient cash in US dollars on hand. While credit cards are commonly accepted at the airport, it is advised to be prepared in case of any technical issues. Please read more information on the US State Department website.

If you are not a US Citizen, you are responsible for checking on the visa requirements for your country. If you need documentation in order to obtain a visa, please contact us at info@wfwp.us ASAP.

Money while in Rwanda

Most U.S. debit cards with international capabilities (Visa/Mastercard) can be used at participating merchants and ATMs in Rwanda. But machine errors, poor connectivity, or local system limitations may result in the dreaded “not working” message. U.S. debit cards generally work at major bank ATMs (e.g., Bank of Kigali, Equity Bank), allowing you to withdraw Rwandan francs. Be mindful of foreign transaction fees and ATM surcharges, which vary by card issuer. Many ATMs allow you to withdraw Rwandan francs using internationally branded debit cards.

Based on the experience of WFWP Japan, VISA credit cards were accepted at markets, restaurants, and similar venues. It was also possible to withdraw Rwandan francs from ATMs located in shopping malls. However, many local markets only accept cash, so it’s advisable to carry Rwandan francs with you. USD can be exchanged locally and at the airport upon arrival.

HEALTH AND VACCINATIONS

Please read carefully through the CDC website which gives information about recommended vaccinations for travel to Rwanda. “CDC recommends that travelers going to Rwanda take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.” Taking anti-malarial medicine does often have side effects. Thus, it is strongly advised to schedule a visit with your primary care doctor or a travel doctor prior to your travel to discuss your upcoming trip and their recommendations.

WFWP Japan has organized many trips to Rwanda until now. We are traveling in November and during this period temperatures are lower, so it is not the peak season for mosquitoes. Thus far, none on the WFWP Japan visit participants have contracted malaria and most do not take anti-malarial medicine. However, every participant takes normal precautions to prevent mosquito bites, especially at night:

  • Wearing long-sleeved shirts, cardigans, and long pants (to avoid mosquito bites, especially in darker places)

  • Personal mosquito repellent spray

  • Mosquito repellent spray for hotel rooms

  • Sleeping under a mosquito net at night, which will be provided by the hotel

While the risk of malaria is lower in Kigali, since we will be traveling to areas outside the capital a couple times, the risk may be higher. Each participant is responsible for considering the risks and deciding on how to proceed. Since individual conditions and constitutions differ, we strongly recommend that those who feel anxious or who have pre-existing health issues consult a physician in advance and prepare accordingly.

There are many good quality hospitals and clinics in Kigali in case of any emergencies. However, it is strongly suggested to contact your health insurance company about coverage while you traveling and consider whether you would prefer to purchase additional travel health insurance.

In order to make an enjoyable and safe trip for everyone, those with severe or unstable health conditions are advised not to participate.
