MIXING IT UP IN NORTH CAROLINA

I always have a story to tell. In the life of the grassroots non-profit organizations existing, serving, and generally operating day-to-day, it is a constant challenge to plan and execute an event. It is especially challenging to locate a SUITABLE VENUE, in a GREAT LOCATION, for the RIGHT PRICE. Back in March 2017, community partners were invited to attend an event hosted by one of our partners and it was held at the Google Fiber Space location. In conversation with the event planners, I discovered that the venue space could be utilized complimentary by non-profit organizations for events that did not involve fundraising, political or religious matters, or parties!

With those particulars 'resolved' it was onwards and upwards with plans, plans, plans... Originally, September 8th was to be a discussion & book launch for "Uncomfortable Truth: On Tour." Lisa C. Williams, one of the co-authors, was to going to be in the area giving an informative look into the complex trauma and social disparities in the health of black, brown, and indigenous sexually exploited girls. Due to a change in Lisa's tour schedule, the book launch was postponed until January 12, 2019, to take place during the MLK, Jr. Task Force event.

In the face of the plan change, there had been a GREAT deal of work done toward the facility, date, and time, so I felt compelled to make it work. Long story short, I decided to co-host a MEET UP/MIX & MINGLE/TALK ABOUT event. Community partners and other guests were invited to gather, enjoy, learn, network, 'Show & Tell Good News' about their perspective programs, and to share up-and-coming opportunities to help each other in a relaxed, informal, great networking atmosphere. There was live music, compliments of Dr. Douglas Barrick - Music Director at Community Church of Christ & WorldChurch/WorldMission Inc. Attendees were encouraged to remember to use the time to "Resolve To Be Involved" and continue to connect and see how things develop. The open mike allowed everyone to share and broadcast their story in their own time.

Zackery Davis an up and coming entrepreneur in the Amway Business talked about his passion for building multiple streams of income so as to have more money for self and others. John Redfern owner of Redfern Photography and official photographer for the MLK, Jr. Task Force of Cary, displayed his artwork and shared that one of the pieces was a scene from when he served in the Vietnam War. The Artwork is entitled "Death A Coming." Rena Hicks, CEO of TAGO On The Go Travel Agency, shared information regarding up and coming travel adventures to Alaska, Las Vegas, Florida, the Caribbean, and New Orleans. This unintended opportunity became a wonderful platform for amazing people to share their stories, work, and inspiration.

Before the evening was over, I was able to also share information about the upcoming WFWP of NC Schools of Africa Fundraising Project 2018. This year's sale will help support 9 schools in Africa. I encouraged all to visit http://www.wfwp.us and look up Schools of Africa for more information. The Seasonal Sale features Mascot Pecan Shelling Company Inc.'s finest handmade pecans and gifts.
