NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE 2015: TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK

National Day of Service 2015

National Day of Service 2015

This year’s National Day of Service was the best one yet. After months of preparing for the big day everything finally fell into place and the atmosphere was filled with excitement from everyone. My personal motto “Teamwork makes the Dream Work,” was the guiding thought for the day.

Even though there were fewer students participating in the Day of Service than in the previous two years, we were able to accomplish what we set out to do. This included cleaning Washington, DC’s historic Georgia Avenue as well as cleaning up Emory Park and the Emory Recreation Center, which was new to this year’s project. Lots of footage was taken to document this awesome occasion. Many restaurants in the area donated delicious food for the participants. We also gave many gifts to the counselors and students along with a certificate with their name on it, recognizing their accomplishment.

As we looked at them working to serve the community, we could see that everyone enjoyed themselves this year more than in the two previous years. The students read the Proclamations that were given by Mayor of DC, Muriel Bowser’s, Office and Ward 4 Councilmember, Brandon T. Todd’s, Office. One highlight of the program was when one of the police officers from the 4th District Metro Police Department spoke to the students. The students truly enjoyed all that she had to share and they asked her many questions. She did an awesome job relating with the students.

The day truly demonstrated the value of “Living for the Sake of Others.” The benefits of serving others and the community shone through on everyone’s faces.
