Backpacks for Africa
On the continent of Africa, less than 50% of primary school-aged children are enrolled in school. Of those schools, the majority of them do not have the facilities or materials to provide their students with a proper education.
After visiting Kenya, Sara Mwamlima learned how students were in desperate need of basic school essentials, which led her to found Backpacks for Africa. Backpacks for Africa is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works on improving various aspects of the educational environment for these students.
Backpacks for Africa provides students with backpacks, school supplies, improves classroom conditions, and builds classrooms from the ground up. The organization also sponsors select students who excel in their studies with aid for their yearly school fees. Instead of giving school supplies in bulk, students are provided a special “school ready” backpack, personalized with school supplies, creating a sense of ownership for the bag and supplies they receive.
