Ms. Stephanie Mann Speaks on Adopt a Block Crime Prevention

Stephanie co-authored, "Alternative to Fear: Guidelines to Safer Neighborhoods." (1975), which is about how one community reduced crime 48% without a local police department. The CA Youth Authority funded this book and thousands were sold to police departments, which helped launch "Neighborhood Watch." Mann worked as a county coordinator and state consultant and authored, "Safe Homes, Safe Neighborhoods: Stopping Crime Where You Live" (1993). While working with the homeless in Oakland, CA, she recognized the need to support children at an early age. She wrote, "Street Safe Kids" to help youth develop self-esteem and stay centered(2000). Mann works with "Mother's Against Senseless Killings." "The Adopt-A-Block Guidebook," is a 10-step guide for groups who already know and trust each other. This book gives groups the tools to reach out and help neighbors. The Adopt-A-Block Guidebooksstrengthens families and stops the social isolation that fuels destructive behavior.
